Although called a bistro, the food at Niko's is Italian rather than French. However, the delicious, down to earth food, decent prices, great service and warm decor really do merit the bistro designation.
We started off our meal with the calamari all'inferno and the salsiccia della casa. The calamari was perfectly fried and coated in a spicy tomato sauce which was a nice change from the usual marinara dipping sauce you get elsewhere. Salsiccia is a sausage made in house and topped with fried polenta cubes. The sausage was just a little bit spicy while the fried polenta added a great crunch to the dish.
Next up we ordered both the spaghettini frutti di mare (seafood spaghettini) and the vitello saltambocca (veal scaloppini with proscuitto) to share. What surprised us though was that the kitchen staff thoughtfully plated each main on two separate plates so that we could sample each dish. The pasta was cooked just right and was subtly perfumed with the aromas of the seafood which included, mussels, prawns, squid and baby shrimp.
Lastly the veal saltambocca was probably my favourite dish of the night. The meat was tender and juicy while the white wine tomato sauce was rich and flavourful.
When we're craving good Italian food, Niko's is the first place that comes to mind, we highly recommend it!
